Today, I am sharing one of my most cherished Goan heritage recipesMethi Paez (fenugreek kheer). This simple, nourishing dish is more than just food; it is comfort, culture, and care in a bowl.

🥣 Ingredients

  • ½ cup Ukdai (parboiled rice) – soaked overnight

  • 3½ tsp fenugreek seeds (methi) – soaked overnight

  • ¾ cup coconut milk

  • Grated jaggery (as per taste)

  • 1 tsp cardamom powder (optional)

  • ½ tsp ghee

  • 2 cups water (for cooking rice and fenugreek)

  • A pinch of salt

  • Dry fruits (cashews, almonds), chopped

🧑‍🍳 Method

1. Soak
Soak parboiled rice and fenugreek seeds overnight (or at least 6–7 hours).

2. Cook the Base
Heat ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the soaked rice and fenugreek seeds, sauté briefly. Pour in 2 cups of water with a pinch of salt. Cook until soft and mushy.

3. Prepare the Sweet Mix
In another pan, gently warm grated jaggery, coconut milk, and cardamom powder. Stir until the jaggery melts completely.

4. Combine
Pour the jaggery-coconut milk mixture into the rice-fenugreek base. Mix well, add chopped dry fruits, and cook for a few more minutes until everything blends beautifully.

5. Serve
Enjoy warm for soothing comfort, or chilled for a refreshing dessert twist.

  • Adjust the fenugreek to taste: add more for medicinal benefits, or less for a milder flavor.

  • Coconut milk gives it a silky creaminess, but a splash of cow’s milk can make it richer.
